Stop and Smell the Roses

It is only now that I am retired that I take the time to slow down and be mindful of what I am doing or not doing,

Another peony has decided to bloom!

use all my senses to take the present in, and to enjoy. Stop and smell the roses has never been so real and so good.

Small but beautiful!

Whenever I reflect on my past, I remember hurrying to meet some deadline, start a new project, finish an old one, and just trying to fit everything into the day, week, month, year that I wanted to or had to.

The project of the day: tie up the hydrangea before they become so heavy with blooms that they fall to the ground!

This isn’t to say that I remember being unhappy, just busy, harried, and maybe unaware of the beauty of the world around me.

Allium seedpods pretty in their own right.

Now I let that world flow through me, like a line from a favorite Mary Chapin Carpenter song “rest in the arms of the Great Wide Open…”

  1. I haven’t gotten there yet, perhaps because I’m still working part of the week and find fitting time for my vocation and avocation into each day a little too busy and stressful. Thanks for the reminder.

  2. It is too bad that many people cannot take the time until after they retire. How enriching it would be to have this mindset, perhaps in conjunction with meditation, throughout all the stages of our lives…
